Postcards provide an effective, yet inexpensive, method to reach a large audience. A recommended size is 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". This slightly oversized format is suggested because the large size stands out in the crowded direct mail environment, while meeting current mailing regulations. The examples below illustrate several design directions that work well in a postcard format. It is important that all postcards designed for university units follow all of the guidelines within the Iowa State University visual identity system.
Effective use of color in combination with the consistent placement of the university nameplate in the upper left corner immediately identifies this as an Iowa State postcard. Locating the nameplate and the college or unit identifier in the red bar focuses attention on this information while not competing with other elements on the page.
