Web tips

To ensure high-quality reproduction of photography, illustration, and artwork in web communications the following guidelines were developed:

  1. Restrictions for file sizes are important for the web. They determine the time it takes for a page to load. The maximum size for a homepage is 75K and a lower level page should not exceed 50k.
  2. Use low-resolution photos only
  3. Scan images at 72 dpi to be used at 100%
  4. Digital photography should be taken at 640 x 480 or 72dpi
  5. All photographs, slides, transparencies, or black and white photos should be sharp and clear.
  6. Carefully review all images to ensure that they are clear and focused. Even slightly out-of-focus images will appear blurry when enlarged.

Photography, illustration, and artwork are considered intellectual property. Any images used on the web must have the approval of the creator or be appropriately licensed.

Contact the department that manages your website for detailed specifications on the use of imagery.
