Visual Identity System

Primary Nameplate

The nameplate anchors the entire visual identity system, and the beauty and appropriateness of the visual identity lie in its systematic approach. Like Iowa State, this visual system provides a solution of increasing modularity for a complex organization, without making the organization appear complicated or difficult. Your participation in this system will foster a strong, unified image that will further the reputation of our university and its facets.

The primary nameplate consists of letterforms customized especially for Iowa State University. Do not attempt to typeset or recreate the nameplate. It should always be reproduced from a digital file. The Iowa State University nameplate and its configurations detailed in these guidelines are the only acceptable graphic identification for the university and its colleges, units, institutes, or centers. No other logos, symbols, or type treatments should be developed or used to represent the university.

The university has registered the nameplate to protect it as a trademark. As such, it can be used only for university purposes or licensed for use by others and cannot be modified without consideration of the trademark implications. The following are aspects to consider when using the nameplate:

Digitized versions of the nameplate are available for download on the Printing Services web site.

With modifier

The primary nameplate may be used with the modifier "of Science and Technology". Reasons to use the modifier

  • When communicating with audiences that are specifically interested in our programs dealing with science and technology.
  • When submitting a grant proposal.
  • When a communication is targeting a specific science and technology related audience.
  • When creating official documents on behalf of the university.

Without modifier

The primary nameplate may be used without the "of Science and Technology" line if the design of a communication requires simplicity. Reasons not to use the modifier:

  • When communicating with prospective students who may be interested in degrees in fields other than science or technology
  • When communicating with audiences with whom the modifier does not strengthen our reputation
  • A college or unit's name is positioned below the nameplate.
  • Simplicity of design.

Alignment

The flush left option should be used for layouts based on flush left typography.

The centered option should be used for layouts based on centered typography.

Area of Isolation

An area of isolation must be provided for the nameplate to achieve maximum visual impact. Do not place type, photos, or any other elements within this area. The amount of space surrounding all four sides of the nameplate, or nameplate/modifier combination, is determined by half the height of the nameplate's large capital letters (I, S, or U).
