College/Department/UnitIowa State's brand architecture is monolithic — where the university's nameplate is the primary identifier for all units, divisions, products, and services. Some refer to this architecture as a "branded house", where the university nameplate is the primary identifier for all units, divisions, products, and services. See brandchannel.com's glossary on branding terms. The consistent and proper use of our nameplate combined with a college or unit name not only strengthens recognition for Iowa State University, but it also projects the university's reputation to all of its units. The following aspects must be considered when using the nameplate and college/department/unit combination:
No other logos, symbols, or type treatments should be developed or used because they dilute the impact of the nameplate/affiliate identity. Acceptable configurations, except for letterhead, business cards, envelopes, notepads, buck slips, fax cover sheets, and memo stationery, are shown below.
The nameplate is the largest element in this combination. The college, department, or unit name must be placed below the nameplate to clearly communicate that the unit is an entity within Iowa State University and derives its value from this association. All university stationery items must be printed by Printing Services. Iowa State University stationery items may only be used for university purposes to conduct official university business. Iowa State stationery items may only be used by our colleges, departments, research centers, institutes, and units. (See the Board of Regents Policy on Outside Consulting, Service Activities, and Other Work. February 11, 1983, Section 7, Subd. 3) Registered student organizations do not conduct official university business, therefore may not use university stationery. An exception is granted for the Government of the Student Body and Graduate Student Senate. If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. TypographyColleges, departments, and units have the flexibility to set their names in either Berkeley Medium or Univers Black. The name can be set in either upper and lower case characters or all caps. The university nameplate should always be the largest element in this combination. The space between the bottom of the nameplate and the top of the unit name must equal half of the height of the cap "I" in the nameplate. The size of the unit is determined by making the height of the first capital letter in the unit name equal to half of the height of the cap "I" in the nameplate.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. AlignmentDepending on the design of the specific application, the college/department/unit name may be positioned flush left or centered.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. Area of IsolationAn area of isolation must be provided for the nameplate - college/department/unit combination. This combination is treated as one unit to achieve maximum visual impact. Do not place type, photos, or any other elements within this area. The amount of free space surrounding all four sides of this nameplate combination is determined by half the height of the nameplate's large capital letters (I, S, or U).
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. ColorThe following colors have been chosen to preserve the integrity of our identity and should be used when the nameplate is combined with a college, department, or unit name.
When the nameplate and the college, department, or unit name are used together, the combination may be printed in certain two-color combinations as shown below or in one color; preferably red, warm gray, khaki, black, or white. If a two-color publication does not use black as one of its colors, the combination nameplate college/department/unit name should be printed in the same color as the text.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. Minimum SizeThe size of our nameplate.s large capitals should be no smaller than 1 pica (.17 of an inch) in cap height, to ensure sharp and legible reproduction.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. |
