AffiliateAffiliates, such as centers and institutes, require special treatment in a strong, monolithic brand architecture, where the university's nameplate is the primary identifier for all units, divisions, products, and services. Because the affiliate's name does not include Iowa State University, it is important that its relationship with the university is easily understood. The visual identity system gives emphasis to the affiliate through its size relationship to the nameplate and the use of color combinations. Even though affiliates can choose to use their nameplate/affiliate conbination in one color, using one of the recommended color combinations will give the affiliate name dominance. The following are aspects to consider when using the nameplate/affiliate combination:
No other logos, symbols, or type treatments should be developed or used because they dilute the impact of the nameplate/affiliate identity. Acceptable configurations, except for letterhead, business cards, envelopes, notepads, buck slips, fax cover sheets, and memo stationery, are shown below.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. TypographyAffiliates, such as centers and institutes, have the flexibility to set their names in either Berkeley Medium or Univers Black, in either upper and lower case characters or all caps. Depending on the layout of the communication, the affiliate name may be positioned flush left or centered. The preferred placement is flush left, as shown. For special applications, like signs, banners, or note cards, the affiliate name may be centered The university nameplate should always be the largest element in this combination. The space between the bottom of the nameplate and the top of the unit name must equal .5 of the height of the cap "I" in the nameplate.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. AlignmentThe flush left option should be used for layouts based on flush left typography.
The centered option should be used for layouts based on centered typography.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. Area of IsolationAn area of isolation must be provided for the nameplate/affiliate combination, treated as one unit, to achieve maximum visual impact. Do not place type, photos, or any other elements within this area. The amount of space surrounding all four sides of this nameplate/affiliate combination is determined by half the height of the nameplate's large capital letters (I, S, or U).
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. ColorThe following colors for our nameplate/affiliate combination were chosen to preserve the integrity of our identity and should be used whenever possible. The combination may be printed all in one color; preferably red, warm gray, khaki, or black, or in two-color combinations as shown below. If a two-color publication does not use black as one of its colors, the combination nameplate/affiliate name should be in the same color as the text.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. Minimum SizeThe size of our nameplate's large capitals should be no smaller than 1 pica (.17 of an inch) in cap height, to ensure sharp and legible reproduction.
If further explanation is required, please refer to our contacts list for the office that can provide you with the appropriate information. |
